When To Call Your Midwife
Pregnancy can be uncomfortable at times and some symptoms that may seem scary are normal. Some symptoms, however, can be early warning signs of bigger issues. This is why it is important to inform your midwife of any new changes and to contact her if you experience any of the following signs or symptoms.
Signs of Early Miscarriage
· Vaginal bleeding or spotting
· Pelvic pressure and/or cramping
Nausea & vomiting…more than typical morning sickness
· Unable to keep food down for more than 24 hours and/or unable to keep liquids down for more than 6 hours
Infections
· Fevers over 101, abdominal pain, rash, painful urination, vaginal pain or itching, abnormal discharge (color or odor), known exposure to disease
· Diarrhea that lasts more than 2-3 days especially if combined with fever, vomiting, or abdominal pain
Your baby’s wellbeing
· Decreased fetal movement or loss of fetal movement
Other potentially dangerous warning signs
· Severe, persistent headaches; seizures; upper right rib pain especially if combined with shoulder pain; blurry vision, double vision, high blood pressure
· Rapid swelling of hands, feet, face, or legs
· Vaginal bleeding, persistent or severe abdominal pain
· Any difficulty breathing while at rest, fainting, or inability to breathe
Signs of Preterm Labor (before 37 weeks)
· More than 4 contractions per hour, increasing in intensity, frequency, and length
· Lower back pain and/or pressure in the butt or pelvis
Veins
· New, painful veins on the lower body
· Any color change, redness, warmth, or pain in the veins on the legs
Mental Health
· Abnormal anxiety, depression, rage, inability to cope
Other reasons
· Water breaks or leaks (gush or trickle)
· Something just feels “off” with you or baby
· Sudden change or increase in vaginal discharge
· Severe itching that affects your day-to-day activities or keeps you up at night, rash
· Any car accidents, falls, traumas to the body
Signs of Labor & When To Call
Potential Early Labor- focus on nourishment, hydration, rest, and relaxation. No need to call at this point.
· Losing your mucus plug- feel free to text a picture!
· Feeling baby drop
· Sudden shifts in energy (more energized, more tired, crankier, etc.)
· Contractions that are mild and far apart, vary in intensity
Heads Up- this would be a great time to send a text so we can be prepared when it is go-time; continue focusing on relaxation, hydration, and nourishment
· Regular contractions that are mild/moderate but still far apart or not lasting very long
· Bloody show- send pics!
· Nausea/vomiting with contractions
Call the Midwife for any of the following:
· Contractions that are 5 minutes apart, lasting for 1 minute, and been that way for at least 1 hour and are progressively getting longer, stronger, and closer together
· Waters release: any pop, gush, or trickle of water. Put on a pad and note the color and smell
· Pressure in your butt/feeling like you have to poop
· Labor Land: unable to walk or talk during contractions or between contractions
· Vocalizing: moaning, groaning, grunting, or heavy breathing with contractions
· Anytime you feel you need your midwife to come!
